David Watson is an internationally respected guitarist and improviser whose more recent work uses the highland bagpipes. His work on the pipes subverts any conventional expectation, drawing on traditional sources, electronica & experimental improv. Watson regularly works across several genres & has performed & recorded with John Zorn, Lee Ranaldo, Eugene Chadbourne, Christian Marclay & Ikue Mori, among others. Watson’s collaborations with visual artists, dancers & choreographers have been presented in venues such as the Guggenheim Museum (Matthew Barney), the Whitney Museum (Abigale Child), the American Dance Festival in Tokyo (Jeremy Nelson), & more. Recent releases includes the album Throats on Ecstatic Peace! & Fingering an Idea, on XI records.

Stacy Szymaszek is a poet and the author of the books Emptied of All Ships (Litmus Press, 2005) and Hyperglossia (Litmus Press, 2009), as well as numerous chapbooks of poetry, including Orizaba: A Voyage with Hart Crane (Faux Press, 2008), Stacy S.: Autoportraits (OMG, 2008), from Hyperglossia (Belladonna Books, 2005), and Mutual Aid (g o n g press, 2004). From 1999 to 2005, she worked at Woodland Pattern Book Center in Milwaukee's Riverwest neighborhood. Szymaszek and Drew Kunz edited the literary journal Traverse from 1999 to 2004. In 2005 she moved to New York City where she is the current Artistic Director of the Poetry Project at St. Mark's Church.

A d00d only recently met with harrowing ideas of fountain sodaz along side Ronald McDonald's trusty hound SUNDAE. But how do you make a mundae?? with a shit load of vintage synthesizers, ya douche bag. Stever rocks it in Emeralds laying down the synth vibe and generally conquering minds at over seas lap dog fests sponsered by his high honor Mayor McCheese. Hauschildt just put out an amazing solo debut --of sorts-- of Kranky records one of America's finest electronic music outlets --that's right better than radio shak. Hauschildt's music is a deep valley of synthetic rays blasting against each other seamlessly and forming new sounds amongst all the racket. Ebbing and flowing, blasting and breathing, the compositions are tight and the jeans are tighter.....oh and pitchfork thinks he rocks more than CosMc.

Microcinemas (i.e. small cinemas) have a creative egalitarian history that extends back to Surrealist salons in 1920's Paris; David Sherman co-founder of San Francisco's Total Mobile Home, the worlds' first microcinema, presents a unique cinema event that ardently explores a history of artist made films presented in reclaimed spaces. The essence of Microcinema as it has developed since the early 90's is a DIY movement that uses the experience of projected film & video to create participatory community, dialogue and aesthetic investigation. This show presents media works spanning over 60 years, including films by the artists Emily Richardson, Vanessa Renwick, David Sherman, Wayne Theibaud, Helen Hill, Kerry Laitala, George Kuchar, and more. The works in this program embody visionary personal filmmaking (many of the films are handmade and made with very modest means) and this event will conjure an inspiring and insightful tour of the outer possibilities of cinema.

Mike P rolls into Amherst on Monday for a double trouble visit. First he'll be joining Andujar live in-studio at WMUA for a special all-Peruvian sounds edition of Radio Clandestino, 230-430pm (ET).

Mike Pigott is a frequent guest on Clandestino, as well as a couple of turns at Rumba Psicodélica in Greenfield. He runs the Masstrópicas record label and is an all around swell guy and we'll be happy to have him with us. The man is obsessed with Peruvian music, from chichas to hardcore. He'll be spinning us some gems from his travels down there. We'll be hearing cumbias, "bumps", psych rock, salsa and more.

Then at 6, head over to Mystery Train Records on N. Pleasant St to hear Mike talk about Peruvian LPs and 45s before hearing some music from Steamrollers and Bunwinkies. Here are more details.

With his documentary My Name Is Albert Ayler, Swedish filmmaker Kasper Collin pays unbridled homage to the titular musician, one of the most innovative and electric but least-known figures in contemporary jazz. Ayler's obscurity is at least as attributable to his short lifespan as it is to his musical iconoclasm -- he died under bizarre and inexplicable circumstances in late 1970; on November 5 of that year, Manhattan police found his 34-year-old body floating in the city's East River, possibly (though not definitively) a victim of suicide. Collin approaches Ayler's life as a straightforward narrative, segueing smoothly from touchstone to touchstone. Byron Coley will introduce the film.

Experimental filmmaker Roger Beebe, whose films have shown around the globe from Sundance to the Museum of Modern Art and from McMurdo Station in Antarctica to the CBS Jumbotron in Times Square, brings a program of his recent mutli-projector films to the Northeast for a fall 2011 tour. In these films Beebe explores the possibilities of using multiple projectors—running as many as 8 projectors simultaneously—not for a free-form VJ-type experience, but for the creation of discrete works of expanded cinema. The show builds from the relatively straightforward two-projector films “The Strip Mall Trilogy” and “TB TX DANCE” to the more elaborate three-projector studies “Money Changes Everything” and “AAAAA Motion Picture” on finally to the eight-projector meditation on the mysteries of space, “Last Light of a Dying Star.”

ABOUT ROGER BEEBE:
Roger Beebe is a professor of Film and Media Studies at the University of Florida. Beebe has screened his films around the globe with recent solo shows at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Anthology Film Archives in New York, and dozens of other venues. He has won numerous awards including a 2009 Visiting Foreign Artists Grant from the Canada Council for the Arts, a 2006 Individual Artist Grant from the State of Florida, and Best Experimental Film at the 2006 Chicago Underground Film Festival. In addition to his work as a filmmaker, he is also a film programmer: he ran Flicker, a festival of small gauge film in Chapel Hill, NC, from 1997-2000 and is currently Artistic Director of FLEX,
the Florida Experimental Film Festival. He also owns Video Rodeo, an independent video store in Gainesville, FL.

ABOUT THE FILMS:
Last Light of a Dying Star (2008, 4 X 16MM, 3 X VIDEO, 1 X SUPER 8MM, 22 min.) A multi-projector meditation on the passage from film to video, from abstraction to representation, and from the technological wonder of space exploration to the banality of the digital snapshot. Originally made for an installation/performance in a planetarium at the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Macon, GA, the film attempts to recapture some of the excitement of the early days of space exploration and the utopian aspirations of expanded cinema. Made as an orchestration of a number of different elements, made and found: handmade cameraless film loops by Beebe and Jodie Mack; 16mm educational films about eclipses, asteroids, comets, and meteorites; and a super 8 print of the East German animated film “The Drunk Sun.” AAAAA Motion Picture (2010, 3 X 16MM, 12 min.) The Manhattan phone book has 14 pages of companies jockeying to be at the start of the alphabetical listings. Capitalism triumphs over linguistic richness yet again. Our challenge: to learn how to write poetry when there’s only one letter left. Money Changes Everything (2009, 3 X 16MM, 5 min.) Three days in Las Vegas, Nevada, and three different visions of the discarded past and the constantly renewed future. A three-part portrait of a town in transformation: a suburban utopia in the desert, a cancerous sprawl of unplanned development, a destination for suicides. TB TX DANCE (2006, 2 X 16MM, 3 min.) A cameraless film made on a black & white laser printer with an optical soundtrack made of dots of varying sizes provides the backdrop for revisiting Toni Basil’s appearance in Bruce Conner’s 1968 film “Breakaway.” Commissioned as part of Mike Plante’s Lunchfilm series, where filmmakers are asked to make films for less than the price of the lunch they’ve just been treated to. (This film’s budget was $32.37 worth of pulled pork sandwiches and peach cobbler.) The Strip Mall Trilogy (2001, 1 X SUPER 8MM/1 X VIDEO, 9 min.) A look straight into the heart of the most postmodern of architectural forms, the strip mall, shot in a mile-long parking lot that could be Anywhere, USA.

Free parking in the big parking lot. that's the first turn off of Ferry St. If you want you can swim in the pond. If you want you can bring fruit to eat. We'll have some fruit too. Kid friendly! There is a bathroom, water fountain, basketball court and playground there. Hopefully we will have some shade too. Also, even though the event is free, donations will be accepted for touring bands.

Last Night's Western Mass Noise/Improv Festival

Last night in western mass there was a noisy improv festival. Two favorites of this scene, both from the well-known and beloved band Fat Worm Of Error, each hosted events at popular music stores in the area. Neel Young had his show at Amherst's Mystery Train Records and Tim Sheldon had his shindig over in Northampton at Feeding Tube.

Happily, Neel played his old man card and scheduled the Amherst show to begin on the early side, around 6-ish and it did so. I arrived just a bit after that time and the first band was already jollily grooving right along. The Feeding Tube show was going to start around 10, thanks to their neighbors at Subway so if a person had a ride and an inclination, one could attend both shows from start to finish. I did do this to the best of my ability, thanks to DbR who was game for the scene as well and my designated driver.

As I started to mention before, we arrived at MT to find everyone blissed out by the band FROZEN CORN, which consists of three men playing banjo and guitar. Josh Burkett switched between banjo and guitar while Chris Carlton played only guitar and occasionally sang lead and Tony Pasquarosa played only banjo and took his turn on the lead vocals. They did sweet old timey music, original and traditional covers. They were the only acoustic set of the night.

Then there were the three other sets of this show at Mystery Train. See chart.

Feeding Tube was a-flurry when we got there, with three blond women getting ready to each do a set as well as Tim Sheldon with his set up of electronica on the couch in the front room. It was not as festive as it steadily became, however, as the time progressed toward the magic 10 pm and the folks started to pour in from Amherst. Tim, performing as Rack Rash, started it all off with a set of low sounds.

I was completely distracted from his music unfortunately, as he had asked me before he started to play to busy myself with his physical props and visual ads during the short set to augment his music. This hullabaloo, although lovely, was not needed as he was begged by the audience to play more after his set quickly finished. He told us that if he were to play more, it would be like "putting a cannonball back into the gun."

We scratched our heads in wonderment at that statement and looked forward to the women's sets.

The last set was by a new band named Tape Jazz. These folks were a super cute couple who I have seen around and I'm very excited to hear their music another night before 8 other acts and hopefully before 12:30 AM. I remained for only a few songs unfortunately.

Parsons Hall Project Space presents the 1^st in a series of ongoing experimental Vilm screening events. "Face Time" curated by media artist and educator Darrin Martin is a program of short film and video meditations on facial difference and distortion. The works span from documentary to experimental genres and explores issues of memory, disability, age, and aesthetic manipulation. The screening includes British filmmaker David Hevey’s “Behind the Shadow of Merrick” which surfaces the archive of Joseph Merrick, better known as the ‘Elephant Man,’ as a means to allow contemporary people living with disability to contemplate their own lives and imagine a relationship with an extraordinary human being. “Suspension” by video artist Anthony Discenza uses analog technologies to manipulate and mix the faces of celebrities into a vibrant and haunting composite of popular culture. Three shorts from Steve Reinke’s The Hundred Videos; Wish, Barely Human, and Instructions for Recovering Forgotten Childhood Memories gives voice to nostalgic longings and repressed desires through case study photographs, appropriated pornographic head shots, and childlike performativity, respectively. Kerry Laitala’s film “Secure the Shadow” cuts between details of interior architecture and stereoscopic medical images, to create a hauntingly ambiguous and open narrative. Kristin Lucas’s Whatever Your Mind Can Conceive coalesces stress levels, environmental illness, and hypochondria in a humorous meeting between the real and imaginary that surfaces to the skin. In “Lilith,” Steina evokes the mythical first wife of Adam through the performative gestures and facial expressions of painter Doris Cross, whose words and actions are processed towards the inaudible and sublime. Come join us for these works and more and to experience an intimate evening of unforgettable close-ups.

The Smith Gamelan is a performance group dedicated to the study of Central Javanese gamelan, one of the great musical traditions of Indonesia. The group was founded in 1995 as a way to introduce Five College students to this unique musical tradition and it is directed by Margaret Sarkissian, Associate Professor of Music, and Sumarsam, a master of the Javanese music tradition and Adjunct Professor of Music at Wesleyan University. The group meets once a week during the school year and presents a performance at the end of each semester. Membership in the Smith Gamelan is open to students, staff, and faculty of the Five College community. Fun at the Bowling Alley

Tonight was special. There was fun bands in Palmer and then these guys finished the night. I felt like I was in on a special treat. Ted Lee and David Russell did a set together and there was half a song of them singing together and I liked how their vocals sounded. David said they often sing together during EggEggs band practice but they never do it where regular people might hear, regular people like me.

All that ended tonight when David shored up the Steve D'Agostino-less Zebu set and the night took a turn. My video catches a bit of the essence but with none of the HD you are all used to from other folks' recordings.

The film was reassembled by Ben Balcom, Sam Shapiro, and Abraham Ravett in an attempt to reconstruct what Tom originally intended. Anthony McCann is the author of I ? Your Fate (Wave Books, 2011), Moongarden (Wave Books, 2006) and Father of Noise (Fence Books, 2003). In addition, he is one of the authors of Gentle Reader! (2007), a book of erasures of the English Romantics, along with Joshua Beckman and Matthew Rohrer. He has taught English as a Second Language in the former Czechoslovakia, South Korea and Nicaragua, as well as in New York City. Currently he lives in Los Angeles, where he works with Machine Project and teaches in the School of Critical Studies at the California Institute of the Arts.

Matthew Rohrer is the author of Destroyer and Preserver (Wave Books, 2011), A Plate of Chicken (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2009), Rise Up (Wave Books, 2007) and A Green Light (Verse Press, 2004), which was shortlisted for the 2005 Griffin Poetry Prize. He is also the author of Satellite (Verse Press, 2001), and co-author, with Joshua Beckman, of Nice Hat. Thanks. (Verse Press, 2002), and the audio CD, Adventures While Preaching the Gospel of Beauty. (Also, with Anthony McCann, they wrote Gentle Reader!) His first book, A Hummock in the Malookas, was selected for the National Poetry Series by Mary Oliver in 1994.

Aimee Bender is the author of five books of fiction, most recently a novel, The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake, winner of a 2010 SCIBA award. Her first book, The Girl in the Flammable Skirt, was a NY Times Notable Book. Her first novel, An Invisible Sign of My Own, was an LA TImes Book of the Year. Willful Creatures was nominated for The Believer Book of the Year Award. A novella, The Third Elevator, has been published twice, in limited editions, most recently by Madras Press. Her fiction has been translated into sixteen languages.

David Means is the author of four books of stories including, most recently, The Spot (Faber & Faber, 2010). Both Assorted Fire Events, the only book of short stories in nearly two decades to win the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Fiction (2000), and the widely acclaimed Secret Goldfish (2004) have been translated into eight languages. His stories have appeared everywhere from Esquire to Harper's to The New Yorker, from from The Best American Short Stories to The Best American Mystery Stories, from Abitare to Zoetrope.

Brandon Downing is a poet and visual artist originally from California. His books of poetry include The Shirt Weapon (Germ Monographs, 2002) and Dark Brandon (Faux Press, 2005), while a monograph of his collages from 1996-2008, Lake Antiquity, was released by Fence Books in 2010. In 2007 he released a feature-length collection of collaged digital shorts, Dark Brandon: Eternal Classics, with a 2nd volume forthcoming in 2011. A longtime member of the Flarf Collective, he lives in New York City, where he co-curates the Poetry Time Reading Series at SpaceSpace.

James Haug is the author of three books--and more chapbooks--of poetry: Legend of the Recent Past (National Poetry Review Press), Walking Liberty (Northeastern University Press), winner of the Morse Poetry Prize, andThe Stolen Car (University of Massachusetts Press). His most recent chapbook is Scratch (Tarpaulin Sky Press, 2010) unless it is Why I Like Chapbooks (Factory Hollow Press, 2011). Factory Hollow Press also published A Plan of How to Catch Amanda (2007). Fox Luck won the Center for Book Arts chapbook competition.

The night features selections from DJ Bongohead's new VampiSoul Records compilation The Afrosound of Colombia. Also hear the underground garage chichas excavated on recent trips to Perú by Mike Pigott of Mass Tropicas Records and the hard 70s African funk as played by Andujar on the WMUA Radio Clandestino program, as well as selections from resident DJ B-COMING. Vio/Miré is, essentially, Providence, RI's Brendan Glasson. His consistently affecting music spans from pop/folk to ambient sound art to chamber music. His instrumentation is similarly wide-ranging and sophisticated. Glasson is often accompanied by a rotating cast of string players, clavichordists, and singers.

Glasson toured with Sigur Ros on their 2008 US tour as a member of the Icelandic octet Parachutes. Celebrate an exhibition of children's artwork with performances, workshops, face painting, storytelling, baked goods and a raffle. The raffle and bake sale will help support children's arts programming.

Sweet Exorcist Returns Friday 3/19 (With Guests)

Come hang at the People's Pint in downtown Greenfield for our March edition of our monthly Sweet Exorcist. DJs Andujar, B-COMING, 12XU and special guest DJ Urthquake from (New Jersey) will be throwing down funk, garage, soul, reggae, bugalú, afro, psych, rap and whatever else is in the crates. The records roll at 10pm, the event is FREE and all ages. It will close at 1 am. That's this coming Friday, March 19th.

A little while back Mark Sheehan, the impresario of the Sierra Grille, floated the notion of lining up a Manor-esque bill over yonder on Strong St. A few days later Viking Moses and Redwing Blackbird separately dropped me lines hoping to set up some gigs and, well, I think you know where this is going....

Yes, it gives me great pleasure to announce that tomorrow night (Thursdee) the following folks'll be appearing at the Sierra Grille:

Viking Moses - Mr. Brendon Massei has touched countless lives since dropping out of high school to pursue musical life on the road. Not only has he collaborated with such folks as Vetiver, Orion Rigel Dommisse, Nat Baldwin, Paul Oldham, Greg Weeks, Otto Hauser and countless others, he was also there to bring Jana Hunter on her first tour and gave John McCaulley III a full-blown case of tour AIDS. Joining him on this swing through western MA will be the eternally charming Ms. Laura Goetz of Golden Ghost. Serious soul shall abound!

Redwing Blackbird - Composed of the core duo of one Austin Wright/Eric Gagne and accompanied by an ever shifting array of musical friends, RWBB will manifest itself as a quartet this outing. You may be pleased to learn that Christine Hayward, who melted hearts and loins at the Manor last month, will be lending her voice to the cause on this outing. And there'll Jeff Murphy's standup bass stylings rounding out the mix. Huzzah!

Out Like Lambs - I don't know much about these cats, but they hail from New Jersey and, from the sounds of it, they'll kick out some expansive jams.

Tongue Oven - Me, Desi and Mark Hanson (Hornworm, Jow Jow, Supreme Dicks, Bunwinkies) will redfine the meaning of folk power trio before your very ears. It's also rumored that one Ms. Candace Hope will be lending some newfound cello skills to the mix.

Show starts at 10 sharp and it's 3 bux at the door.
